Riding day 1: Urubamba to Ollantaytambo to Hidroeléctrica

This incredible 4 to 5-day riding adventure (not including time for exploring Machu Picchu and the Choquequirao trek) begins in the picturesque town of Urubamba. From there, we’ll journey through the heart of the Sacred Valley, a land rich in Inca history and stunning natural beauty. The roads are generally well-paved and wind gently along the valley floor, offering consistently beautiful views of the surrounding, towering peaks.

Our first stop is Ollantaytambo, a living Inca town with an imposing fortress and terraced ruins that seem to touch the sky. This short, pleasant ride sets the perfect tone for the journey. Take your time to wander through its cobblestone streets, imagine life centuries ago, and soak in the palpable history. The ride itself is a feast for the eyes, with emerald green fields giving way to dramatic mountain slopes and the sparkling Urubamba River snaking its way through the valley. This initial leg of the journey is a smooth introduction to the epic landscapes that await. You can spend 2 to 3 hours here.

The adventure truly kicks into high gear as we make our way towards Machu Picchu. While the final approach to the ancient citadel is by train and foot, your Scoolter motorbike will take you as far as Hidroeléctrica, offering an exhilarating ride through increasingly dramatic scenery. Leaving Ollantaytambo, you’ll gradually leave the developed valley behind as the road begins its famous descent.

The route to Hidroeléctrica is an adventure in itself, quickly transforming from paved road to winding, mountainous dirt tracks. You’ll be riding through stunning cloud forests, feeling the air grow humid and dense, and passing countless cascading waterfalls, with the sound of the rushing river accompanying you the entire way. This segment offers some of the most spectacular, raw views of the Peruvian jungle and mountains colliding. Once you arrive at Hidroeléctrica, you’ll safely park your Scoolter and embark on the famous walk along the train tracks to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. This journey combines the thrill of motorbiking with the iconic trek to the Lost City of the Incas, creating a truly unique and immersive experience. The walk to Aguas Calientes can take you 2h30 hours.

Riding days 2 and 3: From Hidroeléctrica to Cachora, vía Pacucha and/or Curamba

Our journey then veers off the beaten path, taking you on a spectacular, full-day ride through the rugged mountains towards Cachora, the starting point for the trek to the magnificent Choquequirao. This segment is where the true spirit of adventure shines, covering hundreds of kilometers and featuring massive altitude changes. From Hidroeléctrica, you’ll first ride through charming Vilcabamba, experiencing authentic Andean life, and then head towards the serene beauty of Pacucha Lake, a shimmering blue jewel nestled amidst the peaks.

The route continues towards Abancay, offering continuous panoramic vistas that will leave you breathless. The road itself is a testament to the raw beauty of the Andes, with challenging curves and awe-inspiring drops. Be prepared for a mix of road surfaces, as this remote section is primarily gravel and dirt, demanding careful and focused riding—but rewarding you with unparalleled photographic opportunities. Reaching Cachora marks the beginning of another incredible chapter – the multi-day trek to Choquequirao, often referred to as Machu Picchu’s “sister city.” This part of the adventure truly highlights the versatility of your Scoolter journey, allowing you to access remote and extraordinary destinations that few travelers ever see. The trekking to and from Choquequirao can take you four days.

Riding days 4 and 5: From Cachora to Pisaq to Urubamba

After your incredible trek to Choquequirao, your Scoolter will be waiting to whisk you back into the heart of the Sacred Valley. The return journey takes you towards the vibrant market town of Pisaq. This leg of the ride offers a different perspective of the mountains and valleys you’ve traversed, with new details emerging around every bend. You’ll navigate back through Abancay and ascend once more, before descending into the familiar, picturesque landscapes of the Cusco region. If you have not spent time in Cusco city, this is the perfect time to do so.

In Pisaq, you can explore its famous artisan market, a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and aromas, where you can find unique souvenirs and immerse yourself in local culture. Don’t forget to ride up to the extensive Inca ruins perched high above the town, offering spectacular views of the valley below. This ride back is a perfect opportunity to reflect on the incredible experiences you’ve had, the challenges you’ve overcome, and the stunning beauty you’ve witnessed. Finally, a short, scenic ride completes your loop back in Urubamba. You’ll return not just with amazing photos, but with memories that will last a lifetime – the thrill of the open road, the awe of ancient civilizations, and the profound beauty of the Andean wilderness.

Ready to Ride? Important Logistics for Your Epic Scoolter Trip

This multi-day motorbike journey is designed for the adventurous spirit, but it requires a bit more planning than a simple day trip. Since you’ll be covering a long distance, traversing significant elevation changes, and incorporating major multi-day treks, it’s crucial to be prepared. The riding portion of the route is approximately 4 to 5 full days of riding, not accounting for stops, unforeseen road conditions, or, most importantly, the time you’ll need to explore the magnificent sites.

Planning for the Inca Wonders

When you reach Hidroeléctrica, you’ll need at least one to two additional days to walk to Aguas Calientes and visit Machu Picchu. Tickets must be purchased well in advance, and you’ll need to account for your accommodation. Similarly, the Choquequirao trek from Cachora is a challenging, multi-day undertaking—typically 4 to 5 days round trip—requiring its own dedicated planning, gear, and supplies. Your Scoolter motorbike will be your trusty companion, but it will need to be safely parked and secured in designated areas (like a hotel or secure lot) while you’re trekking. We at Scoolter can offer advice on secure parking options in both Hidroeléctrica and Cachora. Also remember that we can offer you saddle bags to carry your luggage.
